Situation

Expanding an Artist's Message Beyond the Stage

Artist David Darray Gondwe was casted by production house Nthano Lab who had a powerful vision for a hip-hop musical film that would tackle the difficult themes of sexual harassment, abuse, and self-confidence.

After a three-year development journey, they had a compelling story but needed a strategic partner to help develop its narrative and musical components into cohesive, high-impact media assets that would be ready for a professional launch.

The core opportunity was to translate the raw power of a musical artist's message into a new, long-form cinematic format to maximize its reach and ministry impact.

Tasks

Strategic Development for Film and Music

Damascus Media Group was tasked with providing multi-faceted support to ensure the film and its music were not only completed to a high standard but were also strategically aligned. Our primary objectives were to:

Consult on the film's narrative development to sharpen its message and emotional impact.

Oversee the full development and production of the film's official soundtrack.

Provide "Beyond the Stage" strategic guidance to help the artist and production team navigate the complexities of a major media launch.

Ensure the film and soundtrack worked together as a single, powerful brand to amplify the project's core themes.

Actions

An Integrated Approach to Media Development

To achieve these goals, Damascus Media Group acted as an integrated strategic partner. We applied our "Beyond the Stage" development framework, which treats artists as ministry founders and their projects as new ventures.

Our team worked in close collaboration with Nthano Lab's film crew, providing hands-on consulting for the narrative. Simultaneously, our music production team developed the soundtrack, creating a constant feedback loop between the visual storytelling and the musical score.

This integrated process ensured that the tone, themes, and emotional journey were perfectly in sync across both the film and the soundtrack.

Result

Critically Acclaimed Premiere and Cultural Impact

Our collaborative partnership contributed to a highly successful and acclaimed market launch. The project resulted in several key achievements that validated the power of its message and the quality of its execution:

The film, "16 Barz: King of Bawo," premiered at a prestigious, high-profile event at the Sogecoa Golden Peacock Hotel on November 10, 2023.

The project earned significant industry validation with an official selection to be screened at the Malawi Film Festival.

Both a feature-length film and a full, standalone soundtrack were successfully created, expanding the artist's influence and providing two distinct avenues for audience engagement.

The project has successfully sparked vital conversations around the important cultural and theological issues it addresses, fulfilling its core ministry goal.
